I was talking with a co-worker one day about non-work stuff and she mentioned a recent play that she wrote. She wrote it herself and her church did a very successful production of it and it was awesome. I asked her if she had copyrighted it.

She told me she had so I finally gave in and told someone else(her) that I was writing a book. It was almost like a weight lifting off my shoulders. Almost….

She was quite supportive and asked me questions about it and showed genuine interest in it. This was so new to me. Nobody had known my secret for so long, and now the cat was out of the bag. She asked me a couple of questions about the book and seemed truly impressed that I had done this. Well, maybe impressed wasn’t the right word. Maybe fascinated? She made the comment that she would never have expected that of me. I kind of liked that. Being unexpected always made things better…right?

 

I asked her more questions about how she did her play and if she had gotten the copyright. She told me she had and said it was relatively easy to do. We talked a bit more about it and I went back to work.

 

Later that week at lunch, I went to Google and did a search on copyrights. I saw there is a ton of stuff out there and found the US Copyright official site and started reading. So many rules, guidelines, and instructions. But I guess it is necessary if I want to protect my writings. Then again, if I am never going to do anything with it, do I really need to mess with this? And on top of that I had to pay for it. Was this really something I wanted to do?  She had said it was an easy process. Based on everything I was seeing, it sure didn’t look easy.

 

My mind raced more as I read a bit more on copyrights.

 

I closed the browser and went back to work. I was so unsure of what to do and where to go and how to get there.

 

Maybe I would have a revelation later that gave me all the answers…..maybe.

 

Maybe not…..
